Today I have a new tip, it's called, Form, Courage and Guts!
The focus event for my new tip, is the 4 x 400 relay, for both men and women. If you're looking for motivation before a run or race, to get tougher, or to make the necessary changes to improve, watch a major Track and Field meet. Especially the 4 x 400 relay.
The 4 x 4 is a fun and challenging event, but if you've been paying attention, the top teams in this event are breaking and re-breaking records each week. If you watch the top teams, they have outstanding running form. This skill and talent allows them to challenge the record each week. Their form when going after records only improves. I know what you're thinking, they're sprinters...how will that relate to me? If you want to run a fast half marathon this fall, along with your normal training, jump into a couple of fun 4 x 4's this summer. Your form will improve, you'll be more efficient and longer efforts will be easier.
Each team member of a 4 x 4 relay needs to have strong courage. Once they've reached the college or Olympic level, they train for and plan to execute a record breaking performance. All in! To accomplish what these teams are going after this year everybody has to be all in. It takes quite a bit of courage to run out to the tips of your skies and keep going for your teammates. If you've been watching, they continue to get better, because they continue to challenge themselves. Faith in their training, and courage for one another to reach their common goal.
Guts! My favorite running word. Take off at ninety five percent of your max pace and try to hold this for 45-55 seconds. Now do it in a meet and have your whole team counting on you to do this. Accomplish this and you have guts. I've noticed with the record breaking 4 x 400 relay teams this year, nobody bonks, nobody gives up, they lay it on the line and perform to their best under pressure. Good training and preparation help them achieve these efforts, but they must have the guts to pull it off. For our distance runners think of races like 2016 LA Trials or 2018 Boston. The athletes who excelled in those conditions were able to dig down deep and find the guts to race their best on those days. Challenges of any kind, cause us to learn much about ourselves.
Looking forward to the summer of 2020, the United States should have one of the best 4 x 400 relay teams in history. These men and women are tested, they're proven, and they are hungry. Their mindset should be to set on an Olympic or World record. View a race sometime when you're looking for that extra push for an upcoming race, or just to get out the door on a tough day. I believe concentration on your form, being more courageous, and having guts, will get the job done. Maybe even a little easier. Make your own history great for you.
